Vitamin B-1, Garlic, Mosquitoes, Diabetes and You

HSI.com had a report that I thought people might be interested in learning about; I’ll reprint it in it’s entirety in the ‘read more’ section below.  Basically, it shows a link about how B-1 (thiamine) and garlic together can ‘teach’ cells how to overcome the bad influence of glucose.  This applies to people with both type 1 & 2 diabetes.  As a side benefit, increasing your consumption (and absorption) of thiamine & garlic makes you ’stink’ to mosquitoes, which will provide relief of a different sort during the mosquito-prone summer months.  :)

Good source for exercise/eating habits that WORK

Are you tired of hearing the same old crap peddled to you about how to exercise, how to eat, and trying it to no avail?  Most of what you hear is just recycled old methodology endorsed by the government with the ridiculous, outdated food pyramid as their guide.

And what about exercising?  Do you find that you go through the same tired routines endorsed by trainers for the last two decades, and you get no result, or worse, you gain weight?  It’s hard to exercise, be on a strict diet (that makes no nutritional sense), feel deprived continually and keep it up for months at a time, isn’t it?  That’s why it doesn’t work.  But I have a source that might just help you out…and no, I’m not getting paid to pass this on to you.  :)

Christiana’s Shallow Thoughts–a Must Have in Your Podcast List

Christiana Ellis has done it again.  I really didn’t think she could get any funnier than Nina Kimberly the Merciless, and Space Casey certainly had it’s hilarious moments, but somehow she’s pulled it off.  Christiana’s Shallow Thoughts is quite definitively the funniest podcast in the history of.. uh… history.  I was walking down the street after getting off work, listening to my iPod, and just laughed out loud—I didn’t mean to, but it popped out when I wasn’t expecting it.  People stared, but I think it was worth it.  If you want to laugh too, start here with "Condiment Fraud"– and seriously people, if you don’t like the first three podcasts, there is something very, very wrong with you.  In fact, you might just want to give up & face it… you just don’t have a sense of humor.  It’s ok, there are a lot of people out there like you.  Find a support group.  Remember, we still love you, we just want to love you from a long way away.

Drinking coffee may reduce your risk of liver cancer!!

I thought you all might be interested in research from the 2007 issue of the Hepatology Journal!  To paraphrase: it’s ok to drink coffee if you don’t want liver cancer!  Heh.  Well, not exactly, but here, read this:

In Asia, where consumption of coffee is low, health officials report the highest incidence of liver cancer in the world. But in the U.S., only about 18,500 cases of liver cancer are diagnosed each year.

These numbers don’t necessarily mean that your daily cup-o-joe protects you from this disease, but evidence to support such a claim is mounting.

Research from Tohoku University in Japan that combined data from two large studies that assessed coffee consumption in more than 60,000 subjects. Results showed that occasional coffee drinkers had 30 percent lower risk of liver cancer compared to subjects who didn’t drink coffee.

Risk was even lower for those who drank coffee daily, which confirms the results of another Japanese study that found regular coffee consumption to be linked with a significantly reduced risk of developing a type of liver cancer known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

As reported in the International Journal of Cancer, when the Tohoku team singled out subjects who had a history of liver disease, they found a clear link between coffee intake and a lowered risk of liver cancer. The researchers called for further studies to examine the role that coffee might play in the prevention of liver cancer among high-risk patients.
